Highway One West Coast Road Trip
I recently did a 10 day highway one west coast road trip. It was a whirlwind to the west coast with fellow videographer Matt of The Good Life Film Co. We started in Portland where we met fellow wedding photographer/traveler Robert J Hill for beers and talked shop for awhile. After our brief stint in Portland we headed down the Oregon coast to Bandon Beach which is one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen. From there we hightailed it to the redwoods and camped out 4 miles down a dirt road on the beach in Gold Bluff Beach State Park in the redwood forests. We rose early to gain ground and flew through the Redwoods which is one of the places I would have loved to had more than a few hours. But Sonoma was calling our name. It was beautiful as wine country always is, however, we couldn’t stick around long…off to Modesto! In Modesto we met up with a church that works with the homeless population. It’s a rough town and a rougher area that we stopped in. The people were great and really humanized the homeless for us. We had a chance to talk briefly and get some portraits…but as with everything on this trip…it was time to move. Matt and I then headed to Yosemite. Yosemite was by far the highlight of the trip. I had an engagement session lined up and as we were driving into the park getting ready to camp outside in 20 degree weather my clients invited us to stay with them in their really nice cabin. Winning. The next two days we tried to cover as much of the park as is humanly possibly. The highlight of that being that when we climbed up to the bottom of El Capitan one morning Tommy Caldwell, one of the climbers who was recently all over the news for climbing the Dawn Wall route was removing rope from his ascent. When he reached the bottom we talked with him briefly and had the chance to shake hands and grab a photo. Killer stuff! The next day we drove around the park and had an up close and personal encounter with a coyote. We hiked and hammocked the rest of the afternoon until my engagement session which was so rad! Afterwards we grabbed beers with my clients in the lodge and headed back through the central valley to San Francisco. San Francisco was full of it’s own adventures. We inadvertently stumbled onto a nude beach, Matt surfed in the Pacific for his primera vez(that’s first time in Californian) and I relinquished driving duties finally after being the solo driver for the trip. The last few days went by in a flash and before you know it it was all over and we were headed back on a plane, tired, hungover but grinning ear to ear.
